Overview
The 2021 Acura RDX is a stylish and affordable luxury SUV that may not have the same prestige as its European rivals, but offers a compelling blend of value, performance, and practicality. As Honda’s classier counterpart, the RDX earns points for reliability, with a peppy turbocharged engine and available all-wheel-drive system elevating its athleticism.
Price
The 2021 Acura RDX starts at $39,445 and ranges up to $52,995 depending on the trim and options. We recommend adding the Technology package, which brings a better audio system, navigation, and fancier leather-trimmed seats. The Advance package adds adaptive dampers and a head-up display, but at a significant cost.
Engine
The RDX’s 272-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. The engine delivers responsive acceleration, although the transmission can be slow to downshift. The turbocharged engine produces a high-pitched roar during hard acceleration, enhanced by artificial noise piped through the audio system.
Dimensions
The RDX’s interior features a busy center stack, but its build quality and standard features are appreciated. The cabin’s sporty experience is reminiscent of the Honda NSX, with ambient lighting, power-adjustable heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control. The driving position is flexible, and the rear seats fold flat to accommodate cargo. We fit eight carry-on bags with the seats up and 22 with them folded.
Performance
The RDX shines with its precise-feeling steering, torque-vectoring SH-AWD system, and wonderfully balanced handling. However, the brake pedal’s inconsistent firmness and responsiveness detract from the experience. The RDX’s available adaptive dampers allow for adjustable ride quality, and its large 20-inch wheels provide a sporty stance.
Fuel Economy
The RDX boasts competitive EPA fuel-economy ratings: 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for the front-drive model, and 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway for the all-wheel-drive model. Our testing achieved 25 mpg on the highway, 1 mpg shy of its EPA rating.
The 2021 Acura RDX is a stylish and affordable luxury SUV that prioritizes value and practicality over prestige. With its peppy turbocharged engine, available all-wheel-drive system, and generous luggage capacity, the RDX is an attractive option for those seeking a luxury ride without breaking the bank. While it may not feel luxurious, the RDX delivers a sporty experience and a well-appointed cabin. Its reliability and affordability make it a compelling choice in its class.
