Overview

The 2023 BMW 4-Series offers a stylish, performance-oriented coupe experience, distinct from its 3-Series sedan counterpart. While practicality takes a backseat, the 4-Series delivers refinement, quick acceleration, and premium features.

Price

The 2023 BMW 4-Series is priced from $48,395 to $67,245, providing competitive value in the premium coupe segment. The base 430i starts at $48,395, while the high-performance M440i begins at $59,395. Optional features include all-wheel drive ($2,000), convertible model ($7,500), and Shadowline appearance package (includes M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers). The Premium package no longer includes BMW’s gesture controls for the infotainment system, and the optional head-up display is now exclusive to top-spec M440i models.

Engine

The 4-Series features two potent engines: a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the 430i and a 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six in the M440i. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and benefit from a 48-volt hybrid system. The turbocharged four-cylinder provides decent power, while the inline-six delivers exceptional acceleration and refinement.

Dimensions

The 4-Series interior mirrors the 3-Series’, with premium materials and layout. However, rear-seat space is limited due to the coupe design, and trunk space is less generous than the 3-Series sedan, especially in the convertible model. In testing, the coupe model’s trunk held five carry-on suitcases, one less than the 3-Series sedan. The lower roofline also gives the 4-Series a less spacious feel.

Performance

The M440i delivers exceptional acceleration, courtesy of its turbocharged inline-six. Handling is sporty, with retuned suspension, more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity. However, the ride can feel compliant, and steering lacks feedback. Strong brakes provide impressive stopping power, with a 70-to-zero-mph distance of 149 feet.

Fuel Economy

EPA estimates range from 22-34 mpg, depending on the trim. The four-cylinder 430i coupe earns 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, while the six-cylinder M440i is rated at 22 mpg city and 31 highway. Real-world testing showed the 430i xDrive achieving 34 mpg on the highway. For more information about the 4-series’ fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

The 2023 BMW 4-Series offers a compelling blend of style, performance, and luxury, making it an attractive choice in the premium coupe segment.
